Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow is the most common symptom of golfer’s elbow. Other symptoms of golfer’s elbow can include:

  • Swelling
  • Stiffness of joints
  • Tingling and numbness below the elbow
  • Weakness and tightness in the forearms

Causes

The leading cause of golfer’s elbow is overuse and repetitive movements of the wrist and fingers. Other causes of golfer’s elbow include:

  • Repetitive gripping or flexing can cause pulls and tears in tendons
  • Sports that use a racket or club, such as tennis or golf.
  • Sports with lots of throwing movements
  • Improper weight lifting techniques
  • Weak shoulder, forearm, and wrist muscles

Treatments

When experiencing golfer’s elbow, it is best to stop any strenuous activity using the hands, wrist, and fingers to prevent further stress on the tendons. Treatments for golfer’s elbow include:

  • Application of ice packs to reduce inflammation
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Using a brace and splints
  • Physical therapy
  • Massage therapy
